Product Rave: Orly "LUXE" Nail Polish

I know, I've done way too many nail polish reviews lately but I recently purchased a bunch so bare with me. This will be the last polish review for quite a few posts, I promise!

This review is a little bit different because this is a product I LOVE. This has to be my favourite polish I own. Im very new to the Orly brand, being a recovering nail biter I havent really been too into doing my nails for the past 19 years. Thankfully, I broke the habit last summer. This nail polish is called "LUXE", its a metallic cool gold. In the picture above you can see that it includes silver shimer as well. It doesnt disort the colour at all, just adds impeccable sheen. Im a huge fan of matte polishes or flat colour polishes so it was huge suprise to me how much I liked this one.

The application couldnt be better. The formula is smooth & glides on the nail. The brush is standard & very easy to maneuver. There was no gunking, streaks, or blobbing & its incredibly easy to clean up off the skin. The wear time is very long. I've had this colour on my toes for 3 weeks now & no chipping! My hands get beaten up much more though but it's lasted me two days now & hasnt even scratched. Mind you the metallic shine could be hiding that. It blocks imperfections from being noticable.

Overall score: 5 out of 5!

Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear “Green With Envy” Nail Polish Review

I’ve used Sally Hansen polishes before & never had the best time with them. I found that they peeled off my nails very easily. I’ve been on the lookout for a certain shade of mint green nail polish for about a month now & Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear collection had the perfect shade. It was also on sale, one for $4 or 2 for $5. I saw this green colour & had to purchase it as well (of course I went with the better deal!)

This polish is called "Green With Envy" & is the perfect green apple shade. The colour is opaque, only 2 coats needed & it was very easy to remove from my skin if I painted outside the nail. The application isn’t my favourite though, I find the brush to be very straight & not as flexible as most other brushes are & it blobbed alot. Since the polish blobbed alot I would have to do many brush strokes in order to remove the massive amount of polish applied to the nail which then caused the polish to gunk a bit. This I noticed on my first coat. The second coat erased any imperfections the first coat had. Lasting power on this polish seems to be extremely good. The photo below was taken two days after application & I had also washed some dishes aswell as showered. Im very impressed with this polish & will definitely buy more from this particular line of Sally Hansen. (The coral polish on my one finger is Orly “Terracotta”)

NYC Smooth Skin Liquid Makeup Foundation Review

NYC is a brand I was very familiar with during middle school & early high school. It seems to have a reputation of been a teen makeup brand. Once I discovered higher quality makeup I ditched NYC. It’s been a few years since I’ve used any products from them & it disappeared from alot of drugstores. I was recently browsing the makeup section at Walmart for sales on foundation. I needed a cheap liquid foundation for school purposes. I saw NYC & their sign for a new foundation costing only $5. I picked up a bottle.

I am the lightest shade in this collection, “ivory”. The first thing I noticed was that this colour blended into my jaw line perfectly when I tested it at the store. It became invisible within seconds. The first full application I did really impressed me. This foundation doesn’t have a funny smell like most cheap makeup brands do (it smells just like MAC foundations)

This foundation claims to be a light weight & blendable formula for buildable, flawless coverage. Its for all skin types, oil free, dermatologist tested, non-comedogenic & contains vitamins A & E. I paid attention to each of these claims. Light weight? Yes, it felt extremely light weight on my skin & didn’t appear cakey or uneven. Blendable? Very, this product is so soft & creamy it just glides like butter (it dries quickly so no need to worry about it staying creamy & movable). Buildable? I’d say so, its a light to medium coverage foundation. I applied it for a light coverage since my skin has very few imperfections. Flawless coverage? You tell me. This foundation did not break me out & I have extremely sensitive skin.

I am EXTREMELY impressed with this product, I’ll probably use it as my regular foundation (when I use liquid) instead of as cheap stuff for school. HOWEVER, the packaging for this product is TERRIBLE. I could not get the product out of this bottle for the life of me. I store it upside down in the cup I store my pens & pencils. The top of the lid is rounded so it falls over if placed upside down without anything supporting it. I have to pound the bottle onto the back of my hand to get the product out. Its almost as if the product is super thick when in the bottle & as soon as it transfers to skin it liquefies. Whatever the case may be, the packaging is a total drawback to this product. Its also a glass bottle so there’s no way of cutting it open & storing it in a much better package.

WEIGHT LOSS :)

As I mentioned in my “Blogs To Come?” post, I’ve recently lost around 10lbs since April. I’m extremely happy about this since weight loss has been a struggle for me ever since I was a kid. I’ve never been considered fat but I always had a round tummy. As I got older it turned into “spare tires”. My battle zones are right around my rib cage (just under my bra) all the way around & then the typical love handle area above the hips. These are the hardest areas to lose weight apparently, especially across the rib cage. I’ve tried weight watchers but I felt like I was starving myself & the plan wasn’t focusing on my overall health as no foods were restricted. I’ve tried fad diets which obviously didn’t work. So what have I done differently this time? Alot.

                                        June 2011                                                  March 2011

I started off this year with my mind set that “this is my year”. I signed up for a one year gym membership in February (Goodlife Fitness) & I would drop 5lbs but I’d gain them back after 2 weeks if my eating wasn’t well. Personally, I’ve always found eating healthy to be extremely hard during the winter months. Im not sure why that is but everything good for me just never seemed appealing or I ate too much of things. I yoyo-ed for a little but around the end of march I finally got the hang of going to the gym consistently (minus 2 weeks for my college finals & moving into my new apartment at the same time mid April). My eating was a little harder to conquer but buying my own groceries & having my roommate on a weight loss journey with me has made it a little easier. I create meal plans for the next day when I crawl into bed & I look up the gym’s group exercise class schedules for the day & write down which class I will attend. I eat 5 meals a day & hit the gym 4-5 days a week, depending on my work schedule.

My meals are:

Breakfast
  • 1cup oatmeal or whole grain cheerio’s with skin milk (oatmeal is known to attach onto fat & help get rid of it, large flakes or steel cut are recommended- no instant or sugary flavours)
  • Tea or water (some sort of diuretic to help get rid of water retention from the night before)

Snack 1
  • Apple or grapefruit (usually a fruit of some sort)
  • Water

Lunch
  • Salad or tortilla pizza/tortilla grilled cheese or a scrambled egg sandwich (I use small multigrain tortilla’s & the pizza just consists of one tortilla, tiny amount of pizza sauce & some shredded low-fat cheddar cheese- the grilled cheese is unbuttered, no frying whatsoever & just some low-fat cheddar cheese melted between 2 small tortilla’s- brown eggs are recommended as well as omega 3 eggs, I use whole wheat bread)
  • Yogurt  or applesauce (dairy is important, especially once you hit my age, 20, when your bones start to decalcify)
  • Flavoured water (I never drink juice & Im really not a fan of water so I drink crystal light at lunch for a tasty drink)

Snack 2
  • Applesauce or carrots or yogurt (my 2nd snack all depends on what I’ve had to eat the rest of the day- carrots if Im lacking veggies, yogurt if I had applesauce with lunch or applesauce if Im in the mood for something sweet- I eat unsweetened applesauce)
  • Water

Dinner
  • Seasoned chicken or salmon/sole fish or a taco/taco salad (I always eat a chunk of protein at dinner, I season the chicken myself & I only eat a skinless, boneless breast- fish is delicious & I will dip it in lemon juice or marinate in no sugar added maple syrup- I substitute ground turkey for ground beef in my taco meals as well as use my small multigrain tortilla, I only add lettuce & cheese, no sour cream or salsa which I personally don’t like but it also adds unwanted calories)
  • Frozen veggies or asparagus or mashed cauliflower (mashed cauliflower is a decent substitute for mashed potatoes, I always include some type of veggie in my dinners)
  • Rice or sweet potato fries (a carb for dinner is extremely important after workouts, as is protein, I opt for whole grain rice- sweet potato fries, which are definitely not the best choice but I eat around 8 pieces per dinner & its a much better option than regular fries or pasta or something very starchy- my fries are from McCain & I do not salt them or refry them, I bake them without adding extra oil & rarely dip them in ketchup)
  • Milk (milk or chocolate milk is the best thing to eat/drink after a workout, I eat all my dinners after the gym & I prefer skim milk over chocolate- plus my body reacts horribly to sugary drinks)

Before bed I’ll usually sip on some tea while I read to calm my nerves. I love drinking something that makes you pee before bed so that I always have to go when I wake up & can start my day off detoxified

My workouts on an average week (all classes are 1hour):

Monday
  • Zumba or pilates/yoga mix class

Tuesday
  • Aerobics

Wednesday
  • Zumba or yoga fit

Thursday
  • Zumba or pilates/yoga mix class

Friday
  • Zumba

Saturday
  • Yoga (I rarely attend this class)

Sunday
  • Rest

I try to get atleast three cardio classes in per week & a strengthening class once or twice.

Following this plan has helped me go from 153lbs to 145lbs in about a month & a half. Now that being said, I have reached my first plateau (I only think I’ll experience one since I only want to lose another 15lbs max) so like all weight loss plans, some adjustments need to be made. The main cause for a plateau is that your body needs to slow down & get used to the weight loss before it starts up again to lose even more or your body is used to the routine you’re doing & has just become lazy. Dr Oz mentioned in one of his shows that after your first month or so, its typical to experience your first plateau. I messaged Sarah Dussault from SarahFit.com & she replied back to me saying I need to up my weight & strength training.. I will post an update in about a month or so, possibly sooner if I start seeing results before then.

Happy healthy eating & staying fit!

Revlon "Polished" Top Speed Nail Polish Review

This is a new colour for the Revlon Top Speed nail polish collection.

I got this specific colour because I thought that peach would be an awesome shade for summer, however, this colour is much paler than it looks in the bottle. Its very sheer. I had to do 3 coats to get an opaque coverage. I felt it was too close to a colour you'd find in a "manicure" or "french tips" set at the drugstore. I will probably mix some orange into it to give it some colour.
As for the application, it went on fine. A few blobs on the brush here & there but nothing too difficult. I was fairly impressed with it. But the lasting time? I'd say it doesnt last long. This is the first nail polish I've ever purchased from this line & I'm pretty sure it'll be the last.

Right hand

Left Hand

A couple hours & one shower later one nail on each hand got screwed up. I painted one nail with Orly "Terracotta" which had no damage done. This could just be the specific colour I chose, the rest of the line could be quite nice but my personal experience with this polish wasnt the greatest.

Overall Score: 2.5 out of 5

Blogs To Come?

I have a few blogs in mind that I'll be doing during the next few weeks. I have some reviews on products from brands like NYX, NYC, MAC, OPI, Orly, Sally Hansen, Smashbox, Sephora, Bath & Body Works, & a few more. I'll also have some book/movie reviews & a weightloss blog since I've lost around 10lbs since April (&counting!). So look for those! :)

I may also do an update on my new job, new apartment & the lovely kitty my boyfriend gave me!
